I recall the 'Shadowland' crossover getting bad press when it came out five years ago, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. It comes off the back of the Daredevil run by Ed Brubaker, which left DD assuming leadership of the mystical ninja order the Hand, some of his greatest enemies. Matt naively believes he can turn the Hand into a force for good in Hell's Kitchen and builds a Japanese-style fortress named Shadowland in its centre as his base of operations. He declares marshal law and under his guidance the Hand combats crime in Hell's Kitchen with increasing violence, however, leading other street-level heroes to question Matt's judgment and sanity and to vow to bring down his reign. Among these heroes are Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, with lesser roles for Spidey, Moon Knight, the Punisher, etc. It's nice to see lesser-known characters like Paladin and the Shroud in on the action, too.
The Daredevil and Shadowland issues form the spine of the story, but this is the order I read it in, with all the spin-off limited series and side stories included. None of those were essential and you could argue they were padding, but most were enjoyable.
